Why Google+ is probably a social media winner

Google has a historical failure when it comes to social media space. With the rival Facebook accelerating with 750 Million users, Google had to do something in this space to position itself for future. Several social products like Buzz and wave were complete failure and thus Google has learnt from it. Both the failed products where positioned as a threat to Facebook and Twitter. However Google+ is not positioned in that way. Google+ is called a ‘project’ – not a ‘product’ and it is evolving day by day.

Internal Google news suggests that the new Google CEO and the Founder Larry Page is having Social Media as his number one priority. Here is a view of why and how Google+ may be a probable social media winner.

Google+ is unique:

While both wave and buzz had copied feature, Google+ itself is unique. It has opened up a new way of connecting through its popular features such as ‘circles’ and ‘hangouts’. While the concept of circles is already available in Facebook in the form of secondary feature (such as Lists), Google+ is predominantly based on categorization of your friends.

Google has the capability to cross-sell:

Google is a technology giant that has its core based on search and e-mail. While there are millions of users using search end e-mail on daily basis, Google has the capability to cross-sell Google+ with the other offerings. As you might see we did have a Google+ link in Google’s home page and number of times we did get message from Google about Google+.

Google+ is a step ahead:

With most of the users enjoying Facebook’s chat feature, Facebook failed to re-innovate and move on to next level. Google+ came out with an excellent and unique offering namely ‘Hangouts’. Users are always excited about video and co-interaction. Hangouts merged these highly sensitive feelings of users and are available for free. While Skype offers video conference for cost, this is a tremendous development in the arena of video and conferencing.

Google+ is the fastest to hit 25M users:

If we analyze the growth of Facebook, it took a while to hit the 25 Million mark. However Google+ has hit this mark in just a month time. This is because Facebook was a startup and predominantly became famous by word of mouth and it definitely takes time. Unlike Facebook, Google had pile of money to market, to cross-sell and the better part is they came up with excellent offerings.

It’s live or die situation at Mountain View:

This is an era where social media has turned out how businesses and users think and interact. Google’s search algorithm has always had user interaction as one of the key feature of ranking. This interaction data might be in the format of search click through rate, twitter conversation, re-tweets etc., Now Google had to dominate this space to save its core search business. So Google may do whatever it might cost to stabilize, maintain and dominate this space. Google’s last 2 years of acquisition is a best example.
